Day 317: hark!

My mom is somewhere over Utah right now.  She should be here soon (she got bumped off an earlier overbooked flight for some mad perks) and then we’ll eat a ham.

We’ve also held off on opening any of the presents that came in the mail until my mom gets here, so we’ll have more of a Christmas night than a Christmas morning (unless we just decide to wait until tomorrow and pretend it’s the 25th all over again).

Either way, it’s been a pretty uneventful day.  It certainly is quite different from last year, when we had Katie’s entire family over, and it’ll be a bit different next year when we have an infant.

I suppose every Christmas is different, but it’s hard not to be excited, not only for the love that surrounds me and Katie this Christmas, but for our future Christmases, when we’ll have milk and cookies, presents from Santa, and another little heart to fill with joy and love.

I hope all of your Christmases were joyful and that you enjoy whatever time you have off for the remainder of the year.  May your stomachs be full, your families healthy, and your loves requited.

Day 316: merry christmas (eve)!

It’s actually Christmas already almost everywhere in the world, including here, but Christmas doesn’t really come until you wake up on Christmas day.  Everyone knows that.

My mom is getting into town tomorrow too, so that’ll be exciting.  The three of us (four, if you count the baby) will sit around opening presents, then maybe see a movie, then eat a ham.  It’s a busy day tomorrow!

We considered leaving some milk and cookies out for Santa, but without a child, it seems more like a bad idea than a good idea.  I think what would most likely happen (as NORAD has confirmed that Santa already visited our house when we were in church) is that Daisy would eat the cookies and spill the milk, lick some of it, and throw up or poop all over the house.

It’d be a Christmas morning we’d never forget!  Although it might be good training for the baby, we’ll probably just open one present each, drink some hot chocolate, and go to bed.

Maybe we’ll watch an episode of something Christmas-y, like Ally McBeal.  Or The Wire.  Yeah, probably The Wire.

Day 88: muttertag

Happy mother’s day to all the mom’s out there!

For the rest of you ladies, what are you waiting for? Have a baby already.

For all you guys, what are you waiting for? Have a sex change operation and adopt a baby already.

Day 44: kids are awesome

It doesn’t feel like a Friday today.  Maybe it’s because I started work on Tuesday this week.  Maybe it’s because the excitement of the draft tonight has given me an overabundance of blood in my brain.  Or a dearth?

My mom called me today.  She’s still in a bit of pain, but she’s well loved by her friends, who continue to come over and cook her an overabundance of food.  She has a follow-up appointment on Monday where I predict the doctor will tell her nothing but good news.

She also said that she was proud of me and really happy that I had turned out the way I had.  Well, not in so many words.  It was really nice.  I’ve always lived, as most Chinese children do, in a somewhat constant state of wondering whether I’ve disappointed my parents.  While certainly rather harrowing at times, I’m sure it’s also made me stronger in many ways.

Either way, it’s nice to hear something so direct and confidence-boosting.

What a task it is – rearing a child.  Several of my co-workers have kids or are about to have kids or just had a kid.  It’s really quite amazing.  Each of us was once a baby, our entire lives consisting of our parents and bodily functions.  And now?  Now, we’re working members of society, living on our own (or with some other grown baby that we really like), blogging independent thoughts, and considering the latest stem cell research announcement.

That’s awesome.  Isn’t it?

So that’s why I want to have children (eventually).  Because there’s nothing better or more powerful I could do with my life.

Today, however, the best and most powerful thing I can do is pick a perfect baseball team.
