Day 348: future tech

I wish I could do more things over the Internet.

And it’s not because I dislike people.  I enjoy the company of humans and I’ve been known to even initiate gatherings of humans so that a medium-sized group may form in a single location and we may rejoice over a common interest or goal, like football or cheating at a high-stake baccarat game.

But people make mistakes and people have feelings and other things to do.  Interactions over the Internet are different, especially if there’s nothing but bits on the other end of the conversation.

I renewed my car registration over the Internet a few days ago, painlessly.  I was able to enter in a code specific to my car, view the bill for car registration this upcoming year, and pay with a credit card in a matter of minutes.  The system was able to serve me specifically, without time pressure, and I was able to finish the whole thing without ever having to wait in line or dig my license out of my wallet.

I enjoy ordering food over the Internet because it means that the restaurant gets an exact printout of my order and there’s less room for human error.  It also means that I don’t have to wait on the phone while other orders are taken, repeat myself over a bad connection, give my address every time, or remember to ask if I can pay with a credit card before I hang up.

The Internet codifies routine interactions that many people do so well.  I can do them efficiently and at my own pace, without needing to disturb anybody else.

The imagined future of a few decades ago was wrong.  Computers aren’t here to become intelligent and kill us and the nobody has a personal robot that looks like a person.  No, machines are used to make sure that when we order our custom pizza with a different sauce and two different toppings on each half, we get what we ordered.  And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Day 259: sleepy driver

Driving home from seeing Spring Awakening in San Jose tonight, I felt a bit tired when driving.  It’s not something new; my eyes were just a bit droopy, I wasn’t able to fully focus on distant road signs, and my body and mind just felt tired.

It’s a familiar feeling to anyone who’s had to drive late at night after a long day or simply for a long distance or period of time.

It’s also what I blame for probably the most calamitous moment of my life so far: when I flipped a friend’s car into a ditch.

I was in college and Katie and I were going up to a small town in Canada for spring break.  We were almost there (probably a half hour away or so) and I had volunteered to drive for that stretch when we considered stopping for dinner in a small town on the way.  In one of the biggest mistakes of my life, we decided to forge onward.

It was snowing and a light blanket was covering the roadway.  At some point, I thought I saw something scurry onto the road – an animal, a wisp, something – and I quickly jerked the steering wheel to the left.  It skidded and I felt myself losing control of the vehicle, even as I corrected my sudden turn.  As the back end of the vehicle started swinging to and fro, I think I touched the breaks, which caused the car to do a sudden 360+ degree turn before flipping side over side and off the road.

In retrospect, this accident also affected me spiritually.  While it would be disingenuous to say the experience converted me into a full-blown Christian (or anything else), it would also be a lie to say that it didn’t make me consider that something was watching over me.  The fact that no one – not even my irresponsible non-seat-belt-wearing friend in the back seat – suffered so much as a scratch, the fact that our car managed to go off the road at the precise location of a clearing of the trees, the fact that the friend who owned the car managed to get a brand new one completely free from his insurance and I wasn’t penalized or charged in any way – it all seemed to perfectly come together.

Anyway, the lesson is: don’t drive sleepy.  If you’ve got someone else, pull over and switch.  If you don’t, stop somewhere and take a quick walk in the cold night air or buy a Big Gulp.  I don’t want you to flip your car into a Canadian ditch, even if it does mean getting to talk to a real Canadian police officer about crime rates in his country and curling.

Day 258: new tires

We finally made it over to CostCo tonight and had our tires changed.

Our Corolla is now the proud owner of 4 new Michelin X Radial tires.  I didn’t end up doing too much research on tires.  I just went to the CostCo site, looked up the tires available for my car, and picked what I thought were reasonably priced tires that had a long warranty.

I then looked up some other reviews to see if anyone on the Internet had said anything terrible about them.  The worst thing said about the X Radials were just that they were a bit pricey.  CostCo had a general sale on four new Michelin tires, so I ended up going with the X Radials over a slight cheaper BF Goodrich tire.

We’ll see how these serve.  We had our original factory tires on the Corolla for over 65,000 miles, which is probably way longer than they should have been on there.  The tread was wearing pretty thin, and I’m terrible at remembering to actually rotate them with any regularity.

The ride home from CostCo wasn’t mind-blowing, but I think the new tires will really show their salt when we first have to drive in rainy conditions.  Our old tires had started to grip less surely in the rain, which is not a great feeling to have, especially when you have a pregnant woman in the car.

Also, CostCo fills all their tires with nitrogen, which if my video game experience has taught me anything, means that I can now use boost.

Day 249: goods and bads

Good: I put new wiper blades on the car today, we fixed our broken headlights without having to take the car in to a shop, and there are new tires waiting for us at CostCo.

Bad: My HDMI switcher that I bought not so long ago has decided to stop working.  It’s still well within warranty, so I should be able to get a new one, but it’s a hassle and a pain.

Good: I knocked out King Hippo today.

Bad: He knocked me out once.

Good: The Steelers won today, with Troy Polamalu playing.

Bad: I didn’t get to watch it because the NFL hates me for living in California.

Good: I actually kind of like FlashForward.  And Dominic finally showed up in the episode we watched today!

Bad: Balloon boy was all a hoax!

So, as you can see, today has been a roller coaster of emotions.  Don’t even get me started on the expired yogurt experiment.
