Day 160: leftovers

When it comes to eating at home, I have a certain affinity for leftovers.

There’s something comforting about eating food that I ate only a few days ago.  I know what it’ll taste like, only a bit crunchier or soggier or blander.  I get the satisfaction of clearing out room in our fridge.  And, it’s completely free.

The amount of work I have to do to prepare leftovers for consumption is the simple push of a microwave button.

And I know that I’ll like leftovers, because it’s what I originally ordered at a restaurant not too long ago.  My tastes certainly haven’t changed since then, and if I hadn’t enjoyed my meal, I would have simply not brought the remaining food home.

In summary, leftovers are winners in my book, even if they don’t get eaten the first time around.

Day 141: defying gravity

Katie and I are going to see Wicked tonight.  I’m relatively excited.

It’s also a three day weekend, which is exciting.

I had a delicious BBQ chicken sandwich at lunch today while discussing the financial viability of the Large Hadron Collider.

Then, I had a piece of German chocolate cake this afternoon.

All in all, I’d say it’s been a pretty good day.

I’ll write something about Kodu, the new XBLA community game “lab” that I downloaded last night.  It’s definitely something worth checking out if you have an Xbox 360.

Day 112: what not to eat

I’ve never really thought too much about my overall diet, except that I try to make sure I enough fiber nowadays and I tried not to eat at Wendy’s every day when working in downtown Pittsburgh.

But recently, several friends of mine seem to be turning to vegetarianism for a variety of reasons. It made me think: maybe my somewhat haphazard diet so far will lead to me dying at age 40. I haven’t felt or medically had any detriments so far (aside from some pudginess around the tummy), but it’s early. I wouldn’t be surprised if my body is a dormant den of diabetes waiting to activate.

So maybe it’s time to start paying attention to what goes in my mouth. I doubt that I could really give up meat – even temporarily – but I can certain try to limit the amount that I eat in a week and certainly cut down on the amount of sugar and soda I ingest.

And, on the flipside, I really need to find a way to kickstart a regular exercise routine, be it through my Wii or the gym at work. Either way, that’s something that is almost completely missing from my life.

That, and more vegetables and fruit. And more breakfast.
Now that I think about it, I think a bunch of this would be accomplished by waking up an hour earlier every day.

We’ll see if this actually goes anywhere in a month or so.

Day 104: my milkshake

I tend to like milkshakes, although I don’t often stray far from vanilla in terms of flavor.  I think I like them because of their hybrid state, the feeling that I am doing something that’s not quite real, like I’m drinking something solid.

I like it because it takes something I really like (ice cream) and makes it portable, but unlike its sister – the ice cream cone – isn’t something that can become a sticky mess.

I like them because the experience of drinking one changes as time passes.  Initially, good thick milkshakes are a challenge for your mouth and jaw muscles, but a pleasant one.  As time goes on, and your mouth gets more tired, the drink becomes weaker – almost as if it knew what you wanted! – keeping the mouth strength to coagulation ratio near equal throughout the entire drink.

Lastly, I like milkshakes because they’re like an unhealthy version of milk.  Anything that can take something that’s purported to be part of a balanced diet and turn it into a luxurious and sinful dip into slowly becoming fat is a winner in my book.

Good job, milkshakes of the world.

I suppose I also find it amusing that the word could also be a euphemism for the posterior.
