Day 162: monkey king

I have a thing for the monkey king.

monkey-god11

Part of it is because he’s one of the early superheroes I remember from my Chinese youth.  Much like young American children were excited about Superman or Batman’s next adventure, I still have a graphic novel of the monkey king from my youth, even though it’s entirely in Chinese and I can’t read any of it anymore.  Imagine if instead of the Marvel and DC universe, your pantheon of superheroes was limited to essentially one major character.

I dressed as the monkey king one year for Halloween, even though I had to explain it to everyone I ran into.

I went and saw the mediocre children’s movie The Forbidden Kingdom last year because it had the monkey king as part of its main storyline.

I bought the relatively good graphic novel American Born Chinese after flipping through the first few pages and seeing references to the monkey king.

It’s one of the few Chinese childhood things that I distinctly remember.  There’s one especially vivid memory I have of riding in the back of my parents car, reading a monkey king comic.  I started feeling extremely nauseous and eventually barfed on my book.  I was very upset and loved the book so much that I didn’t want to throw it away, despite the fact (or perhaps my childhood mind couldn’t process) that the book was soaked and would always smell a bit like vomit.

That’s the power the monkey king had (and still has) over me.

Day 161: three years

Today, I’ve been married to Katie for three years.

It’s been a great three years. We celebrated by going to the Melting Pot, where I ate too much food and drank two glasses of wine.

I love my wife! It’s true.

Day 160: leftovers

When it comes to eating at home, I have a certain affinity for leftovers.

There’s something comforting about eating food that I ate only a few days ago.  I know what it’ll taste like, only a bit crunchier or soggier or blander.  I get the satisfaction of clearing out room in our fridge.  And, it’s completely free.

The amount of work I have to do to prepare leftovers for consumption is the simple push of a microwave button.

And I know that I’ll like leftovers, because it’s what I originally ordered at a restaurant not too long ago.  My tastes certainly haven’t changed since then, and if I hadn’t enjoyed my meal, I would have simply not brought the remaining food home.

In summary, leftovers are winners in my book, even if they don’t get eaten the first time around.

Day 159: curling

It’s been a while since I brought up curling with anyone, but I found an unexpectedly willing friend tonight who is as interested in learning/trying curling as I am.

I thought I had lost that potential when I moved away from Pittsburgh and from Brian Gray.

Nonetheless, excited, I came home and looked it up on the Internet and found a Bay Area Curling Club which gives one-time lessons, summer lessons series, and offers league play.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I could easily see myself getting consumed into this world.  I can’t think of any more joyful way to spend a summer evening than in an ice rink, watching a round stone with a handle glide down the ice while yelling at my wife and teammates to broom harder and faster.
