Day 194: everybody loves a comeback

10 weeks into baseball season, I was at the bottom of my fantasy baseball league.  My pitchers were bringing up the rear in 3 of 5 categories and the league leader had almost twice my score.

It was a dark time.

It’s now week 21, with 8 and a half weeks left of regulation baseball season and my team is scrapping to stay in the top half of the league.  I’ve risen from 12th to 5th and hope to have a strong enough bout of pitching in order to finish in the top three.

It’s been exciting, these past few weeks.  I’ve watched my team overcome adversity, when our season looked hopeless at the all-star break.  The fact that they’ve managed to pick at opposing teams scores and work their way up into the top half of the league has been inspiring.

It’s now up to me to single out the categories in which I can still make up ground and take some risks.  Winning the league is probably out of reach at this point; the leading team has managed to sit atop the league since week 4 and has somehow managed to draft a team impervious to slumps and major injuries.

But this comeback has been in the making for several months.  This comeback is destined to be.  Nothing can stop this train.

Except, perhaps, my baseball players getting injured or suspended.  Or playing badly.

Day 193: waffles

We made waffles with fresh fruit tonight for a group of friends, and I think they were delicious.

I bought Katie a waffle iron for her birthday several years ago and we don’t use it all that often, but when we do, it’s totally worth it.

Other than that, I felt pretty unproductive today. I played a bunch of Mafia Wars on Facebook today, which was really out of boredom more than anything else.

Another week approaches! We head up to Portland this upcoming Friday for a wedding in Portland, but it also means we’ll get to drop in on Katie’s parents.

Also, Professor Layton releases tomorrow (truly, in a mere 15 minutes)! The excitement is barely containable!

Day 192: tire

I’m sitting outside a movie theater waiting for the guard to move so we can go in and watch (500) Days of Summer. It must be a pretty boring job, but without early seating movie screen guards, our world would probably devolve into chaos.

I took the car in for an oil change and inspection today. Our nice local mechanic mentioned that the tires looked like they could use replacing and suggested we do it before winter. Does anyone out there have any experience with tire places or, more specifically, CostCo? That’s what our mechanic recommended and where we’ll probably go unless I hear horror stories.

There are high hopes for Tutti Melon after the movie. Is it just me or have pay-by-weight froyo places taken the market by storm? Or is it only a California/west coast thing?

Day 191: cold heat

When I was young, I used to think that I was better in cold weather than in hot. When it was cold, I didn’t feel it as much. On the flip side, when it was hot, I would feel helpless, tired, and much more out of sorts.

As I’ve grown, I think I’ve changed slightly. I think my tolerance for cold has gotten slightly worse and my tolerance for hot weather slightly better. Perhaps it was youthful ignorance or a stubborn will, but I distinctly remember it being colder but not feeling as cold.

Is this a transformation that other people go through, although perhaps the other direction? Do certain people grow up liking cold temperature only to not be able to stand it in their old age? Do people feel heat and cold differently at different ages?

Or is it more a matter of environment? Does growing up somewhere cold mean that eventually you’ll get more used to it and more immune to it?
