Day 210: agenda

The agenda for tonight:

  1. Eat dinner
  2. Play Beatles: Rock Band
  3. Watch Glee
  4. Cut my own hair and record it
  5. Post video to Internet
  6. Fix DVR with new video card
  7. Become rich and famous from Internet video of me cutting my own hair

Currently, we’re on step 2.

Wish me luck.

Day 209: 8:44

The clock in our family room stopped at about 8:44.  Whether that was 8:44 PM tonight, 8:44 AM this morning, or sometime yesterday, I’m not sure.

But it’s very disorienting.  Especially when you spend all night watching the final few episodes of season 3 of The Office only to find that somehow time has managed to stand still.

It’s odd, because watching episodes of The Office always feels so quick anyway.  An episode will breeze by before any time at all has passed, so I wasn’t too surprised to look up and see that it was not yet 9 PM.

Except that the new Woot item had been posted.  And my stomach was hungry.  And Brian, who has a young daughter, was on his Xbox playing Batman.  All of which would have been impossible had it only truly been 8:44, except for me being hungry.

So, I’ll need to put a new battery in our clock and get Katie some Coco Puffs.  The Coco Puffs aren’t really related except that they, too, are timeless.

Day 208: beach

We went to the beach today, which is a labor day tradition from Katie’s youth.  It was nice and warm, except the water, which was very cold.

The beaches around here and of the Pacific Northwest are all cold.  It’s a weird mindset, but something that Katie grew up with.  Beaches have cold water for her since her childhood.

For me, beaches are about swimming in the water – a leftover from growing up on the east coast and my trip to Hawaii when I was pretty young.  Out here in the west, beaches are more about fun in the sand, charming beachfront towns, and wading into the water.  It’s a different kind of beach, but just as enjoyable.

But it’s strange, when my jeans are rolled up and the waves bring the waterline in and the water touches me feet.  When it’s so cold compared to what I expect.  It’s something I still haven’t quite got used to.

I would still like to learn how to surf someday, though, and there’s a much greater chance that that’ll actually happen out here in California.

I hope all of your Labor Days were as relaxing and fun.  Now I’m off to either order a PS3, watch more Gossip Girl or The Office, collapse in bed, or poop.

Maybe all of the above!

Day 207: call me a hypocrite

…but I’m thinking of getting a PS3.

I know, I know.  Where was that man of just three weeks ago that detailed his list of reasons why a PS3 Slim held no interest for him?  Did I happen upon some Sony Kool-Aid while in Portland and take a swig?  Did I win one in some kind of online Google puzzle contest?

Well, no.  All that happened was that I found out that I can apply for a Sony credit card, order a PS3, and get a $100 credit back.  My net cost for a new PS3 would then only be $200, which makes it much more compelling for me.

Why?  I’m not exactly sure why the $100 makes such a big difference.  Maybe because it feels like a $200 price drop on a new slimmer system?  I haven’t quite figured out why my mind reacted so differently to thinking about a $200 PS3 compared to a $300 one.  The truth is, I could afford either.  But, at $200, it really feels like a deal; at $300, it still feels like it’s a bit overvalued.

The hassle, of course, is that I end up having to deal with a new credit card that I’ll probably never use for anything else (unless I buy other things from Sony for more rewards points) and the credit is more like a mail-in rebate because it’s not an immediate discount.  So I still truly send $300 on the system and then on the next credit card statement, get a $100 credit.

Also, all my arguments still hold some worth: will this push me to purchase more Blu-Rays, which I don’t need?  Will this be the start of a slippery slope of impulse PS3 game purchases that will put an even bigger dent into our pocketbook?  These are all things I’ll have to consider.

But I’m sorely tempted to apply for the card and get a PS3 Slim in my hands within the week.
