Day 261: pumpkin victory

I won the EA pumpkin carving contest with my pumpkin that I carved until around 4:30 AM this morning!

I know that yesterday I said it wasn’t a big deal if I won, but winning (even if it was just by applause) did make me happy.  I got two movie tickets, a random book, and the appreciation of my peers.

I also helped the MySims team sweep the three categories we competed in: pumpkin carving, male costume, and group costume.

OK, here are the pumpkin pictures I promised, with a timeline of last night:

So, I’m off to bed a bit early tonight and hoping to sleep most of tomorrow morning.  But, it was all worth it.  The pumpkin looks great and I got free movie tickets.  Also, I really enjoy taking the time to carve tiny details into a gourd.

Day 260: another pumpkin

I’m carving another pumpkin tonight, this one for the EA pumpkin carving contest tomorrow at work.

It’s not really a matter of winning, although that’d be a nice surprise. It’s just that I was excited to have the chance to carve another custom creation after the MorcuPump. Katie and I make a good team, too; Katie’s quite good at turning a picture into a pattern and I don’t mind the rather long task of actually carving.

Sadly, the MorcuPump has died. I somehow managed to buy some kind of auto-destruct pumpkins, as all of the people who participated in our pumpkin carving night seem to have suffered the same predicament.

Off to do some more carving! I’ll post some pictures later tonight or tomorrow.

Day 259: sleepy driver

Driving home from seeing Spring Awakening in San Jose tonight, I felt a bit tired when driving.  It’s not something new; my eyes were just a bit droopy, I wasn’t able to fully focus on distant road signs, and my body and mind just felt tired.

It’s a familiar feeling to anyone who’s had to drive late at night after a long day or simply for a long distance or period of time.

It’s also what I blame for probably the most calamitous moment of my life so far: when I flipped a friend’s car into a ditch.

I was in college and Katie and I were going up to a small town in Canada for spring break.  We were almost there (probably a half hour away or so) and I had volunteered to drive for that stretch when we considered stopping for dinner in a small town on the way.  In one of the biggest mistakes of my life, we decided to forge onward.

It was snowing and a light blanket was covering the roadway.  At some point, I thought I saw something scurry onto the road – an animal, a wisp, something – and I quickly jerked the steering wheel to the left.  It skidded and I felt myself losing control of the vehicle, even as I corrected my sudden turn.  As the back end of the vehicle started swinging to and fro, I think I touched the breaks, which caused the car to do a sudden 360+ degree turn before flipping side over side and off the road.

In retrospect, this accident also affected me spiritually.  While it would be disingenuous to say the experience converted me into a full-blown Christian (or anything else), it would also be a lie to say that it didn’t make me consider that something was watching over me.  The fact that no one – not even my irresponsible non-seat-belt-wearing friend in the back seat – suffered so much as a scratch, the fact that our car managed to go off the road at the precise location of a clearing of the trees, the fact that the friend who owned the car managed to get a brand new one completely free from his insurance and I wasn’t penalized or charged in any way – it all seemed to perfectly come together.

Anyway, the lesson is: don’t drive sleepy.  If you’ve got someone else, pull over and switch.  If you don’t, stop somewhere and take a quick walk in the cold night air or buy a Big Gulp.  I don’t want you to flip your car into a Canadian ditch, even if it does mean getting to talk to a real Canadian police officer about crime rates in his country and curling.

Day 258: new tires

We finally made it over to CostCo tonight and had our tires changed.

Our Corolla is now the proud owner of 4 new Michelin X Radial tires.  I didn’t end up doing too much research on tires.  I just went to the CostCo site, looked up the tires available for my car, and picked what I thought were reasonably priced tires that had a long warranty.

I then looked up some other reviews to see if anyone on the Internet had said anything terrible about them.  The worst thing said about the X Radials were just that they were a bit pricey.  CostCo had a general sale on four new Michelin tires, so I ended up going with the X Radials over a slight cheaper BF Goodrich tire.

We’ll see how these serve.  We had our original factory tires on the Corolla for over 65,000 miles, which is probably way longer than they should have been on there.  The tread was wearing pretty thin, and I’m terrible at remembering to actually rotate them with any regularity.

The ride home from CostCo wasn’t mind-blowing, but I think the new tires will really show their salt when we first have to drive in rainy conditions.  Our old tires had started to grip less surely in the rain, which is not a great feeling to have, especially when you have a pregnant woman in the car.

Also, CostCo fills all their tires with nitrogen, which if my video game experience has taught me anything, means that I can now use boost.
