Day 327: back to work

Tomorrow, I go back to work after having a full 17 days off. It’ll be interesting to see how quickly I can get back into the productive groove, as this Christmas break has been longer than usual and, in some ways, I have very much turned my brain off in terms of work these past two weeks.

From what I remember, we were making a game. I think.

In some ways, it will be like starting a new semester of school, except I’ll still be going to the same classes. It’ll be like returning to an old hobby and hoping that the muscle memory will return quickly so that even if your brain can’t quite remember what a knit is and what a purl is, maybe your hands will.

Also, it’ll mean a return to a normal schedule, where weekday showers become once again mandatory and video game playing is once again reserved for lunch and late at night (and not, oh, all day long). But that’ll be good. There’s only so long that I can go wearing PJs (or less!) until late in the afternoon before I begin to feel like I’m housesitting for the real me.

Lastly, it means I’ll be around people all day again. Though Katie and my mom were around most of the time this holiday, there were still several days where I inhabited the house alone with two cats. And I don’t know if I’ve always been this way, but after a few days, it just got to be pretty lonely. That’s not to say I would wait by the door and jump on Katie when she returned from work, like a eager Labrador, but even just knowing that another person is in the house is enough to make me feel more human again.

I guess I have always kind of been that way. Somewhat needy, somewhat clingy, but in a really charismatic kind of way. Man, it’s going to be great when we have the baby, because he won’t be able to leave our side for years! Rolling down the street with my wife and my son – why, I’ll have my own posse!

I’ve always wanted a posse.

Day 311: shiny

After a late night playing The Saboteur, I slept in this morning for the first time in a long time.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy sleeping in; it’s just that it doesn’t often happen anymore naturally.  I think that my body has become pretty conditioned to just waking up before or around 9 in the morning, given our daily commute time.

Even on weekends, I don’t often sleep past 9:30 much.  I’m sure with the baby, those times will go out the window.

But this morning and today – man, it really does feel like I’m on vacation.  I slept past 11 and lazily played a few games on my DS (the new Zelda) and PC (Torchlight), as well as painting two more walls of the nursery.

This evening, we went out to the mall to do a bit of Christmas window shopping.  While there, we ate at Fuddrucker’s and saw Up in the Air, both of which were quite satisfying.  And I even got to finish up the evening at tuttimelon, eating some yogurt and toppings.

Yeah, what a great day.  There’s not much else to say.

I guess I’m going to go sleep with my wife now.

Day 310: and i’m off

I don’t have to go to work next week, which will feel a bit odd.
That meant that today was my last day of work until the new year, which means that my Christmas vacation started at around 6 PM today, even though Katie’ll still have to work through Wednesday of next week.

What will I do with myself at home for three days? Play video games until my eyes dry out? Finish crocheting that lion I started years ago? Finally watch season 1 of The Wire? Work on a random web application?

I predict all of those…and more! I wouldn’t be surprised if I even managed to get in some useful work next week, like mowing the lawn or making dinner for the two of us.

I will say that it feels nice to know that I have nothing but relaxation ahead of me for two weeks; I don’t even remember the last time I could say something like that. It’ll be nice to play through some of the games I’ve been storing up, too.

And maybe, just maybe, I can actually break my entire series of the Wire out of its shrink wrap. Also, I’ll probably eat cookies for lunch at least one day next week.

Day 277: seattle’d

Katie and I back, safe and sound in our home, from the frigid and rainy environs of Seattle.

It was a whirlwhind trip, filled with the sound of pugets and the fury of bacon.

We celebrated Katie’s siblings’ birthdays and ate lots of food.

I took some videos on my little pocket flip cam, and I’ll try to edit together a five-minute (or shorter!) summary of what happened in the big city.

As for tonight though, both Katie and I are pretty wiped.  I thought I’d play some Modern Warfare 2 when I got home, but I think we’re both just going to hit the sack.
