Day 311: shiny

After a late night playing The Saboteur, I slept in this morning for the first time in a long time.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy sleeping in; it’s just that it doesn’t often happen anymore naturally.  I think that my body has become pretty conditioned to just waking up before or around 9 in the morning, given our daily commute time.

Even on weekends, I don’t often sleep past 9:30 much.  I’m sure with the baby, those times will go out the window.

But this morning and today – man, it really does feel like I’m on vacation.  I slept past 11 and lazily played a few games on my DS (the new Zelda) and PC (Torchlight), as well as painting two more walls of the nursery.

This evening, we went out to the mall to do a bit of Christmas window shopping.  While there, we ate at Fuddrucker’s and saw Up in the Air, both of which were quite satisfying.  And I even got to finish up the evening at tuttimelon, eating some yogurt and toppings.

Yeah, what a great day.  There’s not much else to say.

I guess I’m going to go sleep with my wife now.

Day 309: christmas movies

Katie and I watched a few Christmas movies that we had recorded off of ABC Family tonight as she frosted scores of cookies.

You know what I like about Christmas movies?  No matter what happens, everyone ends up happy.  Even the villains in Christmas movies have a good Christmas.  Everyone comes together at the end and that’s something that you know from the very beginning of the film.

It’s as if we went through life knowing that at the very end, no matter what horrible scraps we got into or who we had made enemies, all of the people who had known us would gather around our deathbed and sing our favorite song together with us while it snowed.

Which I think would be pretty awesome.  That’s why Christmas movies, in spite of (or perhaps because of?) their corny, sappy, unrealistic nature, get a thumbs up from me.

Day 303: bollywood dreams

I like Bollywood films.

I’m fairly certain of that.  Of the snippets I’ve seen in random Indian restaurants and on the Internet, I adore the fact that an entire nation has accepted the fact that every movie will contain songs that further the plot, combined with intricate and exciting dance numbers.

A year ago or so, I made Katie (for the second time) and some college friends watch Om Shanti Om with me.  It was the second time I had watched it, and I enjoyed that 3+ hour Bollywood epic even more than I had the first time.

So, here’s my dilemma.  I’d love to watch more Bollywood films.  But where do I start?

I have no real guide in this genre of film.  Should I just go with the highest rated films in the Bollywood subgenre on Netflix?  I figure I must have some friends who actually know more about this out on the Internet.  Care to help an amateur Bollywood fan out?

What are considered Bollywood classics?  What are hidden Bollywood gems?  Name a movie that I can get easily, and I’ll watch it.

Day 247: where the wild things were

I’ll make this short because I have to go to bed early because I plan to wake up super early tomorrow in order to drive to the beach and eat pumpkin pancakes.

I went and saw Where the Wild Things Are tonight.  It was good.  It was an odd film, as it took a book that can be read in 5 minutes and turned it into a 90+ minute feature film.

It was a strange emotional journey.  I laughed, I cried, and I’m still not completely sure why I did either.  It’s emotional, but I’m not sure why.  It managed to pull me in two completely opposite directions: into the role of a father-to-be and into the memories of childhood.

It was thoroughly enjoyable and I would heartily recommend it, but I feel a bit tongue-tied about actually describing what I liked about it.  Just go see it, I guess.  Then we can meet and discuss it by eating yogurt and toppings while nodding silently at each other.
