Day 296: christmas gifts

I’m not sure if Katie and I are getting each other Christmas gifts this year.  In fact, since we’ve been married and merged our financial lives together, gifts in general are sometimes a bit silly.

It’s different with family members.  We don’t see our parents or siblings all that often and buying a gift for them or getting a gift from them during the holidays is a good feeling, especially if we manage to pick something that they genuinely end up loving and using in the upcoming year.

But for each other?  Our money all comes out of the same bank account and, most of the time, if we need something, we’ll buy it then and there (or wait for a specific time when we think we can get a deal on it).  So, all holiday-timed gifts would be things that we as a household don’t need but would rather be in the category of items that we would probably not honestly buy ourselves given the choice.  Which makes it all feel a little…unnecessary.

A few years ago, we did something quite fun.  Katie and I both went into Target a few weeks before Christmas and set ourselves a limit of $20 to buy the other as many gifts as we wanted.  It turned out to be quite fun.  We managed to retain the element of surprise; we checked out in different lanes and wrapped our presents before the other person could see them.  We also both knew that neither of us had spent over $20, which was a very reasonable amount to spend on frivolities.

It’s a phrase that we’ve all heard through our years of gift giving and receiving, but it seems to become extra true once you truly share everything: it’s the thought that counts.  In fact, at a certain point, the thought is the only thing that really counts at all.  The rest of it?  It’s just buying ourselves stuff.

Day 293: overnight

So I signed up to be a Zappos VIP today, even though I’ve never bought anything on Zappos before.  Why?  Because it was free and it means that I get free overnight shipping for life (or, as they put it, until the cows come home).

It also means I get to shop at http://vip.zappos.com instead of the pedestrian and oh-so-2008 regular website.

But free overnight shipping?  Having been on the paying end of overnight shipping (last holiday season, when we had to mail out some gift cards at the last minute to some of Katie’s relatives), I can tell you that the actual fee for such an extravagance is absurd.

Especially considering how much 2-day shipping costs.  Guaranteeing something anywhere in the country (even within the same state!) tomorrow is 5 times as expensive as guaranteeing it in two days because urgency is expensive.

Letting the postal service do its thing and take however long is necessary for a first-class smallish package?  I can usually get something from San Francisco to New York in about 3 days anyway, for less than the cost of a Big Mac.

So, the moral of the story is: if you’re planning on mailing something to someone for the holidays, don’t procrastinate!  If you actually leave it until the very last minute, those $20 gift cards you’re sending to Aunt Myrtle overnight will actually cost you $40 to get them there by Christmas morning.

Day 289: what i bought today, in chronological order, all from the comfortable glow of my computer monitor

The World Ends with You ($10): a DS game that I’ve been meaning to try for a while.  $10 (half off) was enough to get me to bite on this Amazon deal, especially with free Prime shipping.

Xbox Live 12-month card ($32.61): I’ll need another one when my subscription expires this coming March and it was the lowest price I’ve seen in a while.

Knights of the Old Republic on Steam ($2.49): can you believe I’ve never played KOTOR?  Given that I liked both Mass Effect and what I’ve played of Dragon Age, I thought I should give KOTOR a chance.  Especially at less than three dollars.

Sennheiser RS 130 wireless headphones ($59.95): I’ve been meaning to buy wireless headphones for a while.  This pair was better than the RS 120 pair that I had on my watch list, but was selling today for right around the same $60 price range.

Clothing from Old Navy ($41.51): a pair of jeans for me, a pair of maternity jeans for Katie, and a classy top for a classy wife.  I also had ordered a pair of flannel lined jeans, but they, despite being in my shopping cart, weren’t actually available.  Still, I need new jeans because I inexplicably wear out the crotch of every pair I own way before the rest of them show any wear.

That’s a total of…$146.56, including all tax and shipping.  Not bad, considering that our average CostCo receipt totals more than that.

Katie insists that the best deal of the day was the fact that she got swine flu (vaccine) for free!  We’re number H1N1!!

Also, we watched Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I found enjoyable.

Day 268: christmas in october

It’s not just me, right?  This year, the harbingers of Christmas have popped up earlier than usual.

Before Halloween candy was on sale, I was hearing Christmas music being piped through mall speakers.  Before pumpkins disappeared from the front of grocery stores, aisles were being lined with wreaths and ornaments.

I have nothing against you, Christmas, but isn’t it a bit premature?  Isn’t it a bit mean to take all that thunder away from not only Thanksgiving, who’s gotten used to being an opening act for you, but also Halloween?  Where’s your Christmas spirit?

My gut tells me that this has something to do with the recession, that retailers are hoping to somehow get people to think that a end-of-year holiday shop-a-thon should actually start three quarters of the way through the year.  I just hope it doesn’t backfire, where people get so tired of being reminded about Christmas for three months that they don’t buy anything in late December.

That would mean our retail market would fall apart and I wouldn’t get any presents.
