Day 234: yogurt by weight

Somehow, a few months ago, someone out here decided that the next big thing was going to be selling frozen yogurt (with unlimited toppings) by weight.  Amazingly, they were right.  Now, every other street corner in any even slightly urbane neighborhood has a yogurt by weight place.

For those of you who may not have encountered such a place, I’ll describe it.  You walk in and grab a bowl.  Small, large, doesn’t really matter.  Just depends on how hungry you are.  Then, you put some frozen yogurt in it.  Most places have a row of those soft-serve machines with different flavors.  However much frozen yogurt you want to eat.

Then, you move on to the toppings bar, where you put toppings onto your yogurt (or, if you’re pro like me, you alternate between the two areas so you have layered toppings underneath yogurt).  Again, however many toppings you want.  Most places have a relatively large selection, comparable to something like Cold Stone.

Then, you move to the register, where you place your little cup onto a scale.  Depending on how many ounces it weighs (above the weight of the cup), you pay some amount per ounce.

It’s a pretty slick idea, and it has two factors going for it: the “healthier than ice cream” appeal of a cold treat and the customer choice of nearly every section (flavor, size, toppings).  I’d never gone to such a place a year ago, but now I can think of at least a half dozen such places off the top of my head, and I pass by storefronts promising a new yogurt place coming soon all the time.

How did this happen?  How did frozen yogurt by weight become this year’s Crocs?  Is there a national chain of these?  All the places I know go by different names.  Is it only a matter of time before a bigger corporate entity decides to buy them up and streamline the business model?  Why didn’t anyone think of this before?

I feels like I’m in the middle of some kind of revolution, but I don’t even know what we’re revolting against.  Something is happening here.  Something big.  For those outside of northern California, are these things in your neighborhood too?  How wide is their reach?

Day 202: dvRRRRRR!!

I’ve spent most of tonight trying to fix our DVR, which started to record things without sound a few weeks ago.

So far, I haven’t had too much luck.  The fixes are getting slightly more and more harsh, and I fear that I am just about to reach the line where I wipe the machine and start over, losing those precious Gossip Girl recordings that I haven’t quite caught up on.

Also, I played a demo of the game AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! – A Reckless Disregard for Gravity today and I loved it.  Yes, that’s the actual title.

Lastly, Katie and I just bought one of those little USB video camera things so we can catch every adorable baby moment as it happens and get it up on Youtube faster than two shakes of a walrus’s tail.

It looks like this:

OK, time to go see how the DVR OS reinstall is going.

And perhaps indulge in a fudge bar.

Fudge bars can make any unproductive night satisfying.

Day 175: take me out to the…OMG there’s a guy on the field

Katie and I went to the Oakland A’s game tonight, which was another $2 ticket/$1 hot dog night.  They’re the only times we can afford to see live sporting in this recession.

The hot dog line was shorter than the previous two times we had gone, which was nice.  Also, we saw the Mike Birbiglia baby again!  He looked a little less like Mike Birbiglia when we saw him in his show in New York, but probably more like Mike Birbiglia might look if he was an Oakland A’s fan decked out in baby clothes.

Then, everyone hit, like 50 home runs.  Because of that, Katie and I got coupons for free 2 liters of Pepsi at Lucky, which practically paid for the tickets!

Then a guy ran onto the field, who was not a ballplayer.  He ran all the way across the field, then got stopped by a ball boy or fieldsperson or something.

Then, another guy ran across the field and no one chased him because they were all tired from chasing the first guy!

Then, the A’s won.

It was great.

Now, I’m going to go eat some ice cream, which is free at home, as opposed to $5 at the ball park.  It’s enough to make a guy run across the field.

Day 174: yosemite pictures and the plot to kill hitler

Finally got around to picking some of our Yosemite pictures, which are now up on our Picasa web albums.  Enjoy!

Katie and I watched Valkyrie tonight, which was enjoyable enough.  It’s a bit sad, since you know that it can’t end well for one-eyed Tom Cruise and his cohort of demagogues.  It takes away a bit of the enjoyment because as much as you want to root against Hitler, you know that at the end of the film, Hitler doesn’t lose – at least, not yet.

Still, the cast is pretty eclectic and seeing eyepatched Cruise in cahoots with Bill Nighy and Kenneth Branagh isn’t a bad way to spend an evening.

I stayed up a bit later than anticipated last night, so I think I’m off to take a warm bath, eat some ice cream for contrast, then slide into bed.  Good night, you princes of the Internet!
