Day 305: painting

We started painting the nursery today.  We decided to paint three walls a pale-ish yellow sunshine-y color and one accent wall a bright blue color.

We chose those colors mainly because they matched colors in the baby bedding that we’d purchased.

But then, the blue wall brought up a bit of a psychological dilemma.  Would painting a blue wall prejudice our son into thinking that blue was a male color?  Would our newborn, staring at the blue wall all day, begin down the slippery slope of gender stereotypes, eventually hiding his true emotions from us because he feared it would make him less masculine?

Would it lead him into a life of misogyny, treating women differently because of his childhood wall color?  Would we have picked the color blue if it had been a girl?

Maybe we should have painted the wall pink!  Or maybe, we’re just overthinking it.  Just to be safe, we’ll make sure to let our son play with dolls if he wants to.

Day 231: electricity?

An electrician came over today and helped us get our lights back on.

Then, he said some stuff about lines and fuses and breakers that I didn’t fully understand, but I think the gist of it was that although all our lights and outlets work again, there’s some funky wiring that causes our fuses to be bypassed by some loop/crossing of wires somewhere that – although not dangerous – is not the “right” way to do things.

So, maybe we’ll have an electrician over again in a little bit to do some more wiring work.  But, for now, everything is back on and humming again!

Also, I discovered where our master breaker box is, which should be useful should anything similar to what happened a few days ago happen again.

If you follow this blog, you might have noticed another post earlier today that mentioned Welkin’s Journal.  This is a experimental podcast that I’m trying out that is the journal of a character in the video game Valkyria Chronicles.  This is probably of interest to only a few of you, but if you like hearing my voice, maybe you could get something out of it without knowing what the video game is about.

Time for a fudge bar and some sleep.

Day 229: electric noogie

Something bad has happened.

The lights in our bedroom, hallway, kitchen, and study won’t turn on.

Last night, while Katie was unplugging her laptop charger, one of our fuses blew. I tried replacing the fuse, but when Katie unplugged her cell phone charger from that socket a few minutes later, there were sparks from the socket and the fuse blew again. This time, replacing the fuse did not restore power to the lights in that part of the house.

To top it all off, we even bought some wrong sized fuses at Home Depot earlier tonight. Luckily, I managed to make it to a different Home Depot just before it closed and exchange them for the right size. Still, no luck. It appears we have some actual electrical problems.

So…we filed a claim with our home warranty tonight and a professional will be calling me soon. Hopefully, it won’t take too long or be too dangerous or anything like that.

Fingers crossed. Let’s hope no one gets electrocuted and that our lights come on within the week.

Day 124: snails

I never really had any opinion on snails until we moved into our house.

They come out after it rains and our walk is damp. And they crawl out and sit there, extending their bodies slowly like arrogant junior turtles.

And then, I step on them. Or our rolling garbage container crushes them. And it’s disgusting.

It’s bad for us and bad for the snails. I kind of wish they would realize how dangerous our house and all move.

If reincarnation exists, I hope I never come back as a snail.
