Day 317: hark!

My mom is somewhere over Utah right now.  She should be here soon (she got bumped off an earlier overbooked flight for some mad perks) and then we’ll eat a ham.

We’ve also held off on opening any of the presents that came in the mail until my mom gets here, so we’ll have more of a Christmas night than a Christmas morning (unless we just decide to wait until tomorrow and pretend it’s the 25th all over again).

Either way, it’s been a pretty uneventful day.  It certainly is quite different from last year, when we had Katie’s entire family over, and it’ll be a bit different next year when we have an infant.

I suppose every Christmas is different, but it’s hard not to be excited, not only for the love that surrounds me and Katie this Christmas, but for our future Christmases, when we’ll have milk and cookies, presents from Santa, and another little heart to fill with joy and love.

I hope all of your Christmases were joyful and that you enjoy whatever time you have off for the remainder of the year.  May your stomachs be full, your families healthy, and your loves requited.

Day 316: merry christmas (eve)!

It’s actually Christmas already almost everywhere in the world, including here, but Christmas doesn’t really come until you wake up on Christmas day.  Everyone knows that.

My mom is getting into town tomorrow too, so that’ll be exciting.  The three of us (four, if you count the baby) will sit around opening presents, then maybe see a movie, then eat a ham.  It’s a busy day tomorrow!

We considered leaving some milk and cookies out for Santa, but without a child, it seems more like a bad idea than a good idea.  I think what would most likely happen (as NORAD has confirmed that Santa already visited our house when we were in church) is that Daisy would eat the cookies and spill the milk, lick some of it, and throw up or poop all over the house.

It’d be a Christmas morning we’d never forget!  Although it might be good training for the baby, we’ll probably just open one present each, drink some hot chocolate, and go to bed.

Maybe we’ll watch an episode of something Christmas-y, like Ally McBeal.  Or The Wire.  Yeah, probably The Wire.

Day 315: santa

In less than an hour, Santa is going to take off from the North Pole and begin his yearly trek across the globe. I forget that he has to visit places around the world with our wonky time zones, meaning he’ll actually start when it’s barely even the 24th here in California.

And in our current age of technology and instant information, you can track where he’ll be and when with the help of NORAD and Google Maps/Earth. This year, you can even get Twitter updates!

Santa’s got a funny reputation. At some point, the publicists for the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny give up. At a certain age, kids don’t really believe that they exist, and there’s nobody out there really trying to convince them otherwise. But Santa? Even as an adult, there are movies pushing for a the jolly man. The postal service still keeps him on the route. He’s still got people keeping his name alive.

And for that? I have to give the man some props.

Day 314: the shipping news

One side effect of celebrating Christmas at home this year is the fact that all the gift-giving with Katie’s family has happened remotely.

As a consequence, I expect to get a lot of packages over the next two days. I’m currently tracking about 5 different gifts simultaneously, all of which are traveling from opposite coasts to Portland and DC via two day air. So I can certainly imagine that we’ll be receiving an equal number of packages ourselves.

On the flip side, I wonder if it’s a good time to be a delivery person (you’re delivering gifts!) or a bad time (your delivery truck is really heavy on the 24th!). And I’m sure some of those things are really heavy.
