Day 27: random thoughts before a meeting

I got double-cooked pork from the Chinese place across the street today because I had checks to deposit.  I’m not sure how double-cooked pork is prepared, precisely, but I like the idea of it because it leads me to believe that the cooks spend twice as much time on my meal because it has to be cooked, and then cooked again.  What a deal!

I watched the Woody Allen film Vicky Christina Barcelona last night and looked on IMDB to see who the narrator in the film was.  It’s Christopher Evan Welch, who I had never heard of.  But, Mr. Welch was the voice behind Tails in the 1993 TV show “The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog” so that’s something.

I think I’ve gotten over Scarlett Johansson.  I’m not sure what happened, but I used to think she was really hot and now she just doesn’t really do it for me.  I still think she’s a good actress.

A great way to waste time is to find a movie that you don’t feel too passionately about and read some message board posts about it on IMDB.  For example, take jjjj’s initial assertion that Voiceover narration = lazy filmmaking and follow it down the sordid path of 77 replies.  (The thread is still active, so it may be more than 77 now.)

You should pick a movie that you don’t feel too passionately about though, because you don’t want to be the person who actually posts to IMDB message boards.  Do you?

While going to IMDB, I’m reminded of the little things that make Google Chrome a really slick browser.  I like being able to type “imdb<tab>” and be rewarded with the ability to search IMDB directly from my location bar.

The statuette I have on my desk of a young me is about the same height as two soda cans stacked on top of each other.  A little taller, maybe.

Neither is as tall as my Outstanding Student Award for Excellence in Mathematics from the Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania.  I wonder what life would be like if I was on the Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania.

I certainly wouldn’t be going to a meeting now where I talked about how to create the best experience for new players when they first fire up Sims 3.  I’d probably be solving differential equations or joking about Fermat’s last theorem.  More than I do.  Just, you know, in my free time.

Day 20: my favorite things, a few of

Random question: has anyone played Eternal Sonata?  Is it fun?  Worth playing?  I’m usually not a huge fan of J-RPGs but any game that has Frederick Chopin in a deathbed dreamland fighting monsters with his baton alongside a girl named Polka is intriguing to say the least.

Actually Chopin Eternal Sonata Chopin

Now, here are a few of my favorite things.

Movie: Moulin Rouge!
Honorable Mention: Juno
moulinrougeI didn’t love Moulin Rouge! right away.  I remember seeing it in college in our campus auditorium with several people a few years older than me (Matt Heap, Clare, and Darren maybe?) and feeling like it was a pretty solid movie.  Then, I watched it again.  And a few more times, with the commentary.  I don’t know if it’s the perfect sad love story, the musical numbers, or the frenetic acting through most of the first half of the film, but this is a movie I’ll never turn down.  It makes my lips quiver and my eyes water every time.  In a very different way, Juno makes me laugh and cry and want to have a baby with Michael Cera.  I mean, my wife.

rockin-the-suburbsAlbum: Ben Folds, Rockin’ the Suburbs
Honorable Mention: They Might Be Giants, The Spine
Although I might not qualify Ben Folds as my favorite artist, Rockin’ the Suburbs is an album that is full of tracks I like and I don’t have to be “in the mood” to listen to it.  And you know, “The Luckiest” holds a bit of sentimental value for me.  Alternatively, The Spine is a really fun album and the only songs I don’t thoroughly enjoy are ironically the two title tracks.

lost-logoTV Show (active): Lost
Honorable Mention: 30 Rock
Lost is nothing short of an amazing show, which has managed to evolve without becoming too pretentious or too silly.  Even through commonly-perceived-weakest season 3, I was engrossed.  It’s an epic story and the fact that there’s a definitive ending date makes it unlike most episodic content we get from our TV.  On the other side of the continuity spectrum is weekly LOLfest 30 Rock.  Any show that makes me regularly laugh on average once every 3 minutes is a qualified success in my book.

TV Show (inactive): Slings and Arrows
Honorable Mention: Arrested Development
slings Two years ago, I had never heard of a Canadian show called Slings and Arrows.  Now, it’s probably my favorite show ever.  Clocking in at only 18 hours of television across three 6-episode seasons, it’s something that can be watched in its entirety in a single weekend.  At times funny and touching, all three seasons are constructed masterfully without a wasted minute on screen.  There’s nothing to do when the final half hour of the series plays other than weep.  All three seasons are on Netflix, so you have no excuse not to watch this show.  I’m also obligated to mention Arrested Development on any list of favorites so I don’t lose my cred.

More tomorrow!

Day 10: too much movie makes the scott go awesome

In an hour, Katie and I are headed to the movie theater to take part in the our yearly epic Oscar Movie Showcase.  It’ll be the third (consecutive) year that we’ve decided to do it, subjecting ourselves to the glory of watching five movies in one theatre on one day.  I think that Frost/Nixon closes out the evening for us around 11:50 PM.

That’s pretty much it for today, but I thought I’d answer some frequently asked questions that you have.

Are you crazy?  That’s so many movies to sit through!
I know!  Isn’t it great?  It’s a little crazy but not crazy enough.  The theatre’s usually pretty full and anyone can leave anytime they want.  It’s a great experience, though, and it’s a great way to get pumped for the Oscars tomorrow.

Does your butt get numb?
A bit, but movie theater seats are pretty comfy and you get short breaks in between each movie, as well as a longer dinner break between movies 3 and 4.  Besides, I practice by sitting for 8 hours each day at work.

So if you’ve seen some of them, you just rewatch them?
Yes, except I got lucky this year.  I haven’t seen any of them yet!  Katie’s seen Benjamin Button, but that’s it.  In fact, since we started going to the showcase, we’ve started to avoid watching potential Oscar Best Picture nominees through the year.  Between both of us, we’ve only ever watched one of the five films all three years.  For reference, it was Little Miss Sunshine and Juno the two previous years.  And I could watch Juno as many times as you play it front of me.

How do I win my Oscar pool?
Don’t be swayed by your emotional attachment to the films.  Don’t predict too many upsets, especially this year.  Don’t get last minute jitters and change all of your votes.  And, in most places, vote for Slumdog to take home the statuette.

Do you believe that the best film of the year always wins the Oscar?
No way.  There are so many independent films that get released yearly and there is so much campaigning and politicking around the Oscars themselves that it’d be impossible to say that they always award the actual “Best Picture.”  Heck, sometimes the “real” Best Picture may not even be nominated.  The academy does an admirable job, however, of highlighting some pretty good movies usually, even if their tastes from year to year seem to stay similar.

Oh, do you get any perks at this showcase thing?
Heck yeah!  Free popcorn, all day.  And a collectible lanyard thing!  There’s also trivia in the theater in between movies where you can win posters and stuff, but it’s pretty random and haphazard who gets called on to answer.

All right, I’m off for 13+ hours of quality cinema and will attempt to not let me personal feelings cloud my Oscar pool picks, which are already pretty well solidified.
