Day 202: dvRRRRRR!!

I’ve spent most of tonight trying to fix our DVR, which started to record things without sound a few weeks ago.

So far, I haven’t had too much luck.  The fixes are getting slightly more and more harsh, and I fear that I am just about to reach the line where I wipe the machine and start over, losing those precious Gossip Girl recordings that I haven’t quite caught up on.

Also, I played a demo of the game AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! – A Reckless Disregard for Gravity today and I loved it.  Yes, that’s the actual title.

Lastly, Katie and I just bought one of those little USB video camera things so we can catch every adorable baby moment as it happens and get it up on Youtube faster than two shakes of a walrus’s tail.

It looks like this:

OK, time to go see how the DVR OS reinstall is going.

And perhaps indulge in a fudge bar.

Fudge bars can make any unproductive night satisfying.

Day 186: 80s tv, or the lack thereof

Sometimes, I wonder what I did as a child.  I mean, except for memorize multiplication tables.

I certainly didn’t indulge in television watching – I was too busy doing homework!  And chatting up babes on the Internet.  Kate rattled off a long string of 80s television shows, of which I had watched probably less than 10% of.

I don’t remember watching any episodes of classics like Who’s the Boss, Family Ties, or Charles in Charge.  I remember seeing tidbits of long-running series like Cheers or MASH.  Really, the only shows in my childhood I can lay claim to are those from the TGIF block: Step by Step, Family Matters, and Boy Meets World.

Aside from that, it seems that I missed out on a lot of television nostalgia that others in my generation have.  Katie also remembers a show about a little girl that was a robot called Small Wonder.

I had never heard of it, but I think that my position is the majority here.  Has anyone heard of Small Wonder?  Wikipedia says that it was considered by TV Guide and the BBC to be one of the worst sitcoms ever.

Taking sample SAT tests may have actually been more fun than watching that.  And believe me – I took a lot of those as a kid.

Day 179: call the understudy

I miss the theatre.

Today, Katie and I watched the Young Playwright’s Showcase that was a part of the Theatreworks New Works Festival and it made me wish that I had opted to participate in some kind of playwriting workshop/competition when I was in high school.

It made me wish that I had more time to give to theatre in my life, that I could attend open auditions with the confidence that my regular full-time and wonderful job wouldn’t get in the way.

Tonight, we also watched four episodes of Slings and Arrows, one of the best TV shows ever.  And it made me miss being a part of that crazy experiment that putting on a live show is.

I want to do improv in the streets, reenact Shakespeare on the lawn, write an original one-act in 24 hours and have it staged by people who have never acted before.  I want to capture that magic within the confines of my 10-6 (and sometimes later) job and home life and have it be part of a delicate balance, but theatre isn’t really like that.  Theatre consumes you, it becomes more than just a simple piece of your life puzzle.

But maybe that’s just sad, defeatist talk.  Maybe I just haven’t found that magical place on the spectrum yet where I actually can have everything I want.

Day 157: netflix tv

There’s an interesting trend with new titles that have been appearing on Netflix Watch Now – tv shows that are currently airing.

The series appear on Netflix when the season starts, and new episodes show up as they air.

It’s a bit of a win-win proposition. I get to watch shows on my TV (assuming my Xbox decides to work that day) without commercials on my time without having to remember to record it.

The idea of expiring shows is also intriuguing. Showtime has used this to good effect giving previews of new shows.

Either way, I’m interested to see where this goes. If the future of tv means subscribing to Netflix and getting on demand all network shows, count me excited.
