Day 246: balloon boy

I’m not sure if everyone was as engrossed with the saga of balloon boy today as our little corner of the office was.

A short recap:

At approximately 11 AM, one of my co-workers informed us that there was something going on, that a six-year-old boy had somehow gotten into a homemade helium balloon and was flying through the Colorado air at a high altitude and at high speeds.

I checked Twitter and turned on a live video feed.  The Internet was on fire with balloon boy.  It was gut-wrenching to watch the live video: a small balloon whizzing through the air with a small enclosure at the bottom where the boy might be.  We were all quite nervous when the balloon started to lose helium and to descend.

At around 12:30 PM, it landed relatively softly and rescue crews began deflating what was left and looking for the boy in the balloon.  He wasn’t there.

And there was this moment, this second of absolute terror, because there were now two possibilities: that he had never gotten in the balloon at all or that he had fallen out of the balloon.

It turns out that it was the former.  The boy (named Falcon) had been hiding in the family’s attic in a cardboard box for hours.

If you search for the story now, you’ll find cynical stories about it being a publicity stunt by the family.  But putting all that aside, putting aside why Falcon hid in a cardboard box in the attic for hours when his family was looking for him, those two hours in the middle of the day today were emotional.

I didn’t know who this boy was, but it didn’t matter.  It was happening right now and there were so many ways that it could have ended badly.  It was a moment when we were all just frozen and helpless, watching a balloon fly through the air, armed with nothing but hope.

Day 210: agenda

The agenda for tonight:

  1. Eat dinner
  2. Play Beatles: Rock Band
  3. Watch Glee
  4. Cut my own hair and record it
  5. Post video to Internet
  6. Fix DVR with new video card
  7. Become rich and famous from Internet video of me cutting my own hair

Currently, we’re on step 2.

Wish me luck.

Day 188: the schwan man

Tomorrow is an exciting day.

Tomorrow, the Schwan man comes.

Has anyone ever had the Schwan man visit their house, bearing lovely frozen dinners and ice cream treats?  Katie’s family experienced this joy when she was young and we’ve decided to try it out ourselves.

The best part is that we can then place future orders online, after which a man will magically appear at our house on Wednesday evenings, as if he had taken our wish list and gone grocery shopping for us.

Katie also said that the Schwan people, when they visited during her childhood, would wear little temporary booties to prevent their shoes from dirtying the floor of your house.  We’ll see if that bit of charm is still part of their routine.

Day 167: prelude to a rooster hat

I preordered a game this morning online for the first time in a very long time (maybe ever?  I’ve been trying to comb my memory for another preorder, but can’t come up with anything immediately) because I wanted a hat that made me look like a rooster.

Sigh.  What’s to become of me?

I’ve been making turkey sandwiches for lunch for me and Katie the past couple of days, and I have to say that it’s been giving me a great feeling of satisfaction.  Certainly, the satisfaction seems disproportionate to the amount of work I actually do in the morning to make the sandwiches.

It also saves a small amount of money each day on lunch, which I can then use to buy things like games that come with rooster hats.

I was looking for something clever to write about Courage Wolf here, because he always cheers me up when I’m uncertain or unsure about something (like the awesomeness of free rooster hats), but in searching for a good Courage Wolf, I found a site called knowyourmeme.com, which is…well…a little too meta-Internet for me.
