I posted an entry each day during my 26th year of life.

Day 137: sweat

I’m unsure if it’s a gland thing or just because I’ve got too much awesomeness to keep in, but I sweat a lot.  I don’t sweat at cooler temperatures than other people, but I do tend to sweat a disproportionate amount.

Perhaps it’s because I never grew up using too much deodorant and my sweat glands got used to the free reign they had over my body?

Perhaps I’m more nervous than the average person.  Or more intense.

Either way, I’ve learned to live with my sweaty self.  Although, I suppose, for everyone else’s sake, maybe I should use deodorant more often.

Day 136: i can has butt thermometer?

I took Princess to a new vet today. She was overdue for her vaccine boosters and there’s a bit of black gunk on her chin right now (which the vet indicated might be cat acne). She behaved pretty well, except when she was a bit restless during her second shot and when she freaked completely out when the doc wanted to use clippers to try to shave a bit of hair off her chin to get a closer look.

Visiting a vet is an interesting experience, as it’s a bit of a judgement of me as an owner; did I do right by my cat this past year? Did I do anything wrong? Is my cat well-behaved enough that she’ll let you stick a thermometer up her butt?

It’s also handing over something very personal to someone I don’t know. That doesn’t happen all that often in life and it’s a bit uncomfortable, especially for intellectual control freaks like me who want to always know exactly what’s happening all the time.

Luckily, Princess seems to be perfectly healthy, except for her obesity. I swear, no matter how much we feed her, she seems to just keep gaining weight. Perhaps I should try to get her to start using Wii Fit or EA Active.

Day 135: napping

I read yesterday online about something called polyphasic sleep or something similar. I’d actually heard about it a few years ago, but the article I read yesterday reminded me of it.

The basic idea is that instead of getting all your sleep at night, you take 4 or 5 naps throughout the day. The deprivation of a full chunk of sleep tricks your brain into entering REM sleep more quickly and you get all the rest you need in a combined total of only two hours each day.

I thought about possibly pursuing a less drastic cycle with a core sleeping chunk at night, but only for 4 hours or so with two naps scattered through the day. It’s a heavy undertaking though, with warnings about feeling a bit out of it for a week or so. Can I afford that?

I’m not sure, but if it means I actually get four more hours each day, it might be worth trying.

Day 134: demise of the drive-in (and michael jackson)

I’m not old enough to really have nostalgia about drive-in movie theaters, but I remember going to one double-feature back at a drive-in near Pittsburgh and it ended up being a rather affordable and charming way to take in a movie.

We watched Superman Returns and Poseidon.  Neither was a terribly gripping movie, but Katie and I could eat food and chat if we wanted to, without worrying about disturbing our neighbors.

Out here, our nearest drive-in is a half hour drive (about what the Pittsburgh drive-in was), but we haven’t gone yet.  I’d like to sometime.  There’s something about the experience that can’t be captured with any other activity.  It’s a shame that drive-ins are so rare and so far away for most people.

Also, both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson died today.  As I mentioned a few days ago, I didn’t listen to too much music in my youth, but this still feels important.

I’ll see if I can play a Jackson song in Rock Band or Karaoke Revolution tonight, in remembrance of the King of Pop.

And I’ll watch some episodes of Charlie’s Angels.  Or The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars, where Farrah voiced a Faucet.  True story.
