Day 78: lots of writing

One of my main responsibilities on my new team at work is writing.  There is a lot of writing that needs to be done in the upcoming few weeks and I’m feeling a bit daunted by it.

I sometimes sit and stare for a while at the empty text box when beginning a blog post and wonder: what new small piece of knowledge could I impart to the Internet today?  What funny anecdote from my childhood would entertain my readers today?

And then I wonder, if I have trouble filling in less than 500 words a day, what chance do I stand against the mountains of text that my job requires?  How will I write coherent storylines and character-driven humor under the pressure of career deadlines?

There’s no real choice.  Failure isn’t an option, just like not blogging isn’t an option.

I have to find ways to keep motivating myself not just to keep writing, but to keep writing well.  Whether it’s with short stories, anecdotes about my life, or the odd list, there’s nothing to do but keep moving forward.

On a completely unrelated note, someone who works at Katie’s theatre company has a confirmed case of swine flu!  How terrifying.

Day 77: long day

I arrived at work at around 7 AM this morning. I left around 15 minutes ago. A nice, long 16 hour day.

It’s been a while since I’ve been at work that long in a single day, but Katie had a much more stressful day than I. She had to deal with 25 high school students getting their scenes turned into actual dramatic fare (or as close as possible). All I had to deal with was controlling the speech of a few MySims. And Hunter’s smug expression.

I tried to make myself something like a latte this morning, but it was a pretty big failure. I didn’t heat up the milk, so it was more like an iced latte. Oh, well. It still woke me up.

The MySims team has been very fun, and quite a departure from the Sims 3 team in terms of environment. There’s just…a lot of work that still needs to be done.

The good news is that I want to do it all.

Day 76: what the beginning of romeo and juliet might look like if written by a high school student

The Prologue walks out.  He’s dressed different from the other actors.  He wears a robe or toga or something.

PROLOGUE: In the town of Verona, there are two families that don’t like each other.  Anyway, two lovers kill themselves and by doing so, they teach an important lesson to their parents.  And…that’s what this play is about.  If you pay attention, we think you’ll like it!

The Prologue leaves and two petty thugs, Sam and Greg enter.  They’re blinged out.

SAM: I’m not gonna be a gofer!

GREG: No, because then you’d have to live underground.

SAM: Oh, snaaaaaap.

GREG: The only thing I hate more than living underground is that damn Montie Gang!

SAM: Damn straight.  I’d totally mess ‘em up if we came across any of them.

GREG: Well, they ain’t ever seen a gun this big

Greg draws a large revolver and shows it off.

SAM: That’s what she said!

GREG: Oh, snaaaaaaap.  Oh, snap.  Seriously, here come some Monties.

SAM: Let’s flip ‘em off as we go by, see if they take it.

Abe and Caesar enter.  They’re blinged out too, but in a different color.  Like red, instead of black or something.  As they pass, Sam flips them the bird.

ABE: Did you just flip me off?

SAM: I extended my middle finger.

ABE: Did you extend it at me?

GREG: Don’t do it, dude!

SAM: Uh, no.  I am not flipping you off, but I am flipping it.  Just, in general.  For practice.

GREG: You wanna go?

ABE: No, I don’t wanna go.

SAM: ‘Cause if you do, I’ll all about it.  I’m as good for it as you are.

ABE: Not better?

GREG: Dude, say better!  Our gang leader is coming!

SAM: Yeah, better!

ABE: You lying mofo!

GREG: Bring it on!

They start to draw their guns and run behind cover.  Oh yeah – there should be cover here.  Some benches or bus stops or something.  Ben enters.

BEN: Hey guys, what’s going on – Oh, snaaaaaap.

Day 75: moving cubes

I moved cubicles today at work, which is always an interesting experience.  It’s like a tiny version of actual moving and it was a little sad to see my old cube entirely empty (except for the few gifts I left for the next occupant: post-it notes, a pen, a stapler, and lots of dust).

It was also a lot of fun to unpack my stuff in my new cube.  What makes unpacking at work typically a bit more fun is two factors: first, it’s much easier to say hello and meet your neighbors than when moving into a house or apartment – there are no doors in the way – and second, half of the stuff you unpack are tacky personal items or toys (or perhaps that’s just at EA).

It was made even more fun because one of my new neighbors, Ian, kept exclaiming about how I had so many “cool toys,” which made me feel like the one kid on the block who owned a Super Nintendo.  Although in this case, the Super Nintendo was a postal scale (or a Boba Fett helmet).

Ian also gave me a Christmas Chewbacca (or just a Christmas wookiee – how can one really tell?), which was nice.  My new space is a bit smaller, but on the plus side, I’m in an open pit now, which means I can look around and see many people (that I assume I’ll be working with) rather than drab cubicle walls.

Directly in my line of sight is the back of Hunter’s head, which is quite nicely tended.  I think he uses a very nice shampoo and conditioner, or perhaps has a personal concierge that washes it for him.

I shall ask him and report the answer tomorrow.
