Day 186: 80s tv, or the lack thereof

Sometimes, I wonder what I did as a child.  I mean, except for memorize multiplication tables.

I certainly didn’t indulge in television watching – I was too busy doing homework!  And chatting up babes on the Internet.  Kate rattled off a long string of 80s television shows, of which I had watched probably less than 10% of.

I don’t remember watching any episodes of classics like Who’s the Boss, Family Ties, or Charles in Charge.  I remember seeing tidbits of long-running series like Cheers or MASH.  Really, the only shows in my childhood I can lay claim to are those from the TGIF block: Step by Step, Family Matters, and Boy Meets World.

Aside from that, it seems that I missed out on a lot of television nostalgia that others in my generation have.  Katie also remembers a show about a little girl that was a robot called Small Wonder.

I had never heard of it, but I think that my position is the majority here.  Has anyone heard of Small Wonder?  Wikipedia says that it was considered by TV Guide and the BBC to be one of the worst sitcoms ever.

Taking sample SAT tests may have actually been more fun than watching that.  And believe me – I took a lot of those as a kid.

Day 185: customer disservice award of the day

…goes to Zales.

Earlier this week, one of the diamonds in Katie’s engagement ring fell out.  It made for a half hour or so of great stress before Katie managed to find it in in her purse.  It must have come off when she reached in to grab something.  What a relief!

I had bought the ring at Zales over four years ago and at the time had paid for their lifetime diamond commitment.  I had never read over the full details, but I suppose I should have.

Our interaction at Zales today went something like this.

Katie: This ring is from Zales and we have this lifetime coverage.  The diamond fell out of it earlier this week and I was wondering if I could get that fixed.
Zales Lady: Sure, let me go take care of this.

(She goes to the little room in the back with the ring and our commitment, and comes out a few seconds later.)

Zales Lady: This warranty is expired.
Katie: Isn’t it a lifetime warranty?
Zales Lady: That’s only the diamond.  It doesn’t cover the ring repair.

(There’s an awkward silence for a few seconds, as we wait to see if there’s any further explanation forthcoming.)

Katie: I guess we’ll just take this someplace to get it repaired then.

And we walk away from the smiling Zales Lady.

So it’s a slightly disingenuous policy.  I mean, I took the lifetime commitment to mean that if the diamond falls out of your ring through no fault of your own, Zales will fix it for you.  But no – that, it seems, isn’t enough of a “broken diamond” and falls under ring repair.

I suppose if the diamond had fallen out of Katie’s ring and she hadn’t found it, Zales would have replaced the diamond for us.  Would they have replaced it in the ring?  Or would they simply have handed us the diamond in a bag and thanked us?

Either way, it was a disheartening experience and enough to turn us off from purchasing from Zales again in the future.  Which is a bit of a shame, seeing as how we’d gone there for our engagement rings, our wedding bands, and Katie’s bridesmaids’ presents.

Day 184: perfect?

I find it charming when Katie wears my shirts.

She’s wearing one now. It’s the one with the grasshopper on it. I like it! It’s cute.

There are moments during our marriage when Katie says a certain word in a certain way or looks at me with a certain face or asks a question in a certain tone when I just know that things are perfect.

Most times, we just sit together and watch TV, or eat pizza in bed, and understand each other. Is there any greater comfort than that of a relationship which has entered this phase? Having a best friend with whom one can always be absolutely truthful and completely relaxed?

No, I don’t think there is anything better.

Day 183: half done

Every time I mention that my Xbox working, it breaks the next day. I shouldn’t have jinxed it yesterday. It appears my only recourse now may be purchasing a new one. Sigh. Or, I guess, selling all of my 360 games and being done with it forever. But we all know that’s not going to happen.

It’s also a big milestone: I passed my half birthday yesterday peacefully and this will mark over 50% of entries written for the year. Only 182 more entries to go!

I finished reading The Prestige tonight, after a riveting and fast-paced few days. I haven’t consumed a book like that since the Harry Potter series. It left me wanting to read more, which is all you can really ask from a book, really.

My hair is entering that weird mid-stage length where it’s not short enough to just leave alone in the mornings but not quite long enough to cut.

So, the question is…what should I read next? And how long can I wait until buying another 360? And has anyone hacked an original Xbox to put a different OS on it before? I’ve managed to acquire a free one in the past week.
