Day 305: painting

We started painting the nursery today.  We decided to paint three walls a pale-ish yellow sunshine-y color and one accent wall a bright blue color.

We chose those colors mainly because they matched colors in the baby bedding that we’d purchased.

But then, the blue wall brought up a bit of a psychological dilemma.  Would painting a blue wall prejudice our son into thinking that blue was a male color?  Would our newborn, staring at the blue wall all day, begin down the slippery slope of gender stereotypes, eventually hiding his true emotions from us because he feared it would make him less masculine?

Would it lead him into a life of misogyny, treating women differently because of his childhood wall color?  Would we have picked the color blue if it had been a girl?

Maybe we should have painted the wall pink!  Or maybe, we’re just overthinking it.  Just to be safe, we’ll make sure to let our son play with dolls if he wants to.

Day 303: bollywood dreams

I like Bollywood films.

I’m fairly certain of that.  Of the snippets I’ve seen in random Indian restaurants and on the Internet, I adore the fact that an entire nation has accepted the fact that every movie will contain songs that further the plot, combined with intricate and exciting dance numbers.

A year ago or so, I made Katie (for the second time) and some college friends watch Om Shanti Om with me.  It was the second time I had watched it, and I enjoyed that 3+ hour Bollywood epic even more than I had the first time.

So, here’s my dilemma.  I’d love to watch more Bollywood films.  But where do I start?

I have no real guide in this genre of film.  Should I just go with the highest rated films in the Bollywood subgenre on Netflix?  I figure I must have some friends who actually know more about this out on the Internet.  Care to help an amateur Bollywood fan out?

What are considered Bollywood classics?  What are hidden Bollywood gems?  Name a movie that I can get easily, and I’ll watch it.

Day 302: stinky tofu

Today, a group of co-workers and I went to a place called China Bee.

There, we ordered a variety of dishes in an attempt to simulate a trip to Taiwan. One of the signature dishes of Taiwanese cuisine is stinky tofu. So, of course, we ordered some stinky tofu.

I haven’t eaten stinky tofu in a while, but I do remember eating some of it back in my youth and at various times when visiting restaurants with my parents. But, I suppose that gives me some kind of advantage.

Of the four other people I went to lunch with, three attempted to eat one piece each but failed. The last person was too intimidated to even try. I then shouldered the responsibility of eating the rest of the plate – around 6 pieces or so.

I don’t take any particular pride in eating something that other’s couldn’t. I would have preferred that everyone liked the dish. But, it made me curious: are there foods out there that I couldn’t stomach? Does everyone have their stinky tofu? In recent memory, I don’t remember anything that I actually could not finish eating, but I think that’s a very similar attitude to what my co-workers had before that stinky tofu got into their mouths.

Food is such a delicate topic when it comes to taste. Different cultural dishes have such different tastes and so many are acquired tastes that it would be completely unsurprising to one day find my stinky tofu.

That’s not an invitation to try and find such a food for me, though.
