{"id":608,"date":"2009-11-09T23:28:25","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T07:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/?p=608"},"modified":"2009-11-09T23:28:25","modified_gmt":"2009-11-10T07:28:25","slug":"day-271-layoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/?p=608","title":{"rendered":"Day 271: layoffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you might have read on the <a href=\"http:\/\/kotaku.com\/5400728\/ea-cutting-1500-jobs-to-reduce-costs\" target=\"_blank\">blogs<\/a> or more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/10\/technology\/companies\/10game.html\" target=\"_blank\">highbrow news sources<\/a> today, EA announced plans to cut 1,500 jobs today.&#160; No, I didn\u2019t get laid off.&#160; Yes, I still have a job.<\/p>\n<p>But every round of layoffs, no matter when they happen, what the financial rationale, how many people are affected, always hurts on a more personal level.&#160; Every round that affects our location\/division involves people that I know and, often, have worked with.<\/p>\n<p>And it never seems fair, especially in light of the announcement today that EA is finalizing $300 million deal to <em>acquire<\/em> a startup that makes Facebook games.<\/p>\n<p>But I don\u2019t know the long-term financial EA plan, nor do I know the day-to-day finances, so I\u2019m not in a position to say that these layoffs are not the best way forward toward making EA a better company, both in terms of products released and bottom line profits.<\/p>\n<p>Still, school never prepared me for stuff like this.&#160; Muffing interviews and not getting jobs?&#160; Sure.&#160; You soon learn to deal with rejection at a business level.&#160; But good people who did solid, necessary work being there one day and gone the next?<\/p>\n<p>I never get used to that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you might have read on the blogs or more highbrow news sources today, EA announced plans to cut 1,500 jobs today.&#160; No, I didn\u2019t get laid off.&#160; Yes, I still have a job.
