{"id":579,"date":"2009-10-26T22:08:34","date_gmt":"2009-10-27T06:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/?p=579"},"modified":"2009-10-26T22:08:34","modified_gmt":"2009-10-27T06:08:34","slug":"day-257-stuffingfake-progress-bars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/?p=579","title":{"rendered":"Day 257: stuffing\/fake progress bars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I like stuffing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good side dish (or, for the adventurous, main course) that goes well with everything.&#160; It\u2019s flavorful enough that a small portion is all you need, but it\u2019s easy to make enough for a large group.&#160; It\u2019s also something that has holiday connotations but is not restricted to only being eaten on Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s something that I\u2019d be proud to have in my pantry any time.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t like fake progress bars.<\/p>\n<p>What UI designer thought it could <em>ever <\/em>be a good idea to put something that looks like a progress bar into an installation sequence, but not have that bar mean anything?<\/p>\n<p>Why would a bar, having filled up entirely (and thus, clearly having designated that the current task is done) simply start over?&#160; It\u2019s frustrating to the user because not only do they not know when the current task will be done (that\u2019s something I can live with), it gives false hope and information about the length of time the task will take in reality.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d rather have a dot that gets bigger and smaller.&#160; Or, how about\u2026nothing at all?&#160; An hourglass instead of a cursor?<\/p>\n<p>But please, don\u2019t give me a bar that fills up over and over again.&#160; It is more than pointless; it is an outright lie, and the convention should be banned from appearing anywhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I like stuffing.
