{"id":124,"date":"2009-02-28T12:48:05","date_gmt":"2009-02-28T20:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/?p=124"},"modified":"2009-02-28T12:48:05","modified_gmt":"2009-02-28T20:48:05","slug":"day-17-a-review-of-non-existent-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/?p=124","title":{"rendered":"Day 17: a review of non-existent music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This album was generated via the latest meme to hit my Facebook Friends.<\/p>\n<p>The artist is from a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:Random\" target=\"_blank\">random Wikipedia article title<\/a>, the album title is from the last few words on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quotationspage.com\/random.php3\" target=\"_blank\">a random quotation<\/a>, and the art is from Flickr\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/explore\/interesting\/7days\" target=\"_blank\">recent interesting pictures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/albumcover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"albumcover\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"240\" alt=\"albumcover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scott-n-katie.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/albumcover-thumb.jpg\" width=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>I decided to take it a step further and write a short review of said album.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wentworth\u2019s Folly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Philip Wentworth burst onto the scene last year with the bizarrely brilliant <em>asks for nothing<\/em>, it was hard not to take notice.&#160; Combining interesting and rarely heard instrumental arrangements with a knowledge of rock history, the entirely instrumental rock album was a breath of fresh air in today\u2019s top 40 obsessed era.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, it was too inaccessible.&#160; Aside from the emotionally charged and very short \u201cfor diane,\u201d none of the tracks got radio play and it felt like Wentworth would be remembered as that odd, talented artist that no one had ever heard of.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Wentworth\u2019s sophomore album has a lot going for it.&#160; In many ways, it feels like a direct response to critics, as half the tracks on this album involve vocals, although not all of them may be considered singing, strictly speaking.&#160; However, it gets mired down by how exceptional <em>asks for nothing<\/em> was.&#160; There are rhythms and arrangements here that we\u2019ve heard before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cborn to fail,\u201d \u201cthe underground railroad,\u201d and \u201cbooms in my head\u201d all sound like tired rehashes of better tracks from <em>asks for nothing<\/em>.&#160; The vocals, while stirring, start to blend together and it won\u2019t be long before you can\u2019t tell if you\u2019re listening to \u201cfascinating scism\u201d or \u201cthe sale at macy\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say there isn\u2019t original stuff on there.&#160; Title track \u201cwhat we think of ourselves\u201d flows so smoothly that you\u2019ll feel sad when it ends and it\u2019s one of the few places where the vocals complement instead of clash with the music.<\/p>\n<p>Wentworth\u2019s crown jewel on this album, though, is clearly the gut-wrenching ten minute instrumental that closes it out.&#160; \u201cregarding my beheading after the battle of hexham\u201d is better than everything else on the album put together.&#160; If you\u2019re thinking of buying one Wentworth track online, I heartily recommend it over my previous favorite from <em>asks for nothing<\/em>, \u201cunderwear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, unlike his first, this isn\u2019t a groundbreaking album and with the odd choices Wentworth makes in many of his tracks, it may have the exact opposite effect than intended.&#160; <em>what we think of ourselves<\/em> will be a must-get for current fans of his music, but it may even further alienate the general music-buying public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This album was generated via the latest meme to hit my Facebook Friends.
